Fellowship

Election to the fellowship

Fellowship is the federation's principal form of recognition. It is conferred by election, on the judgement of peers, and carries no fee-based route of entry.

Criteria

What election recognises

Excellence of scholarship

A sustained body of published research judged outstanding by peers in the candidate's discipline.

Contribution to the field

Evidence of having shaped a discipline, a method, an institution or a generation of researchers.

Practice and application

Applied social scientists working outside the academy are eligible on the same terms as researchers.

Service to the federation

Contribution to joint programmes, editorial work, translation or the convening of scholarly exchange.

Process

How nomination works

  1. 1

A nomination is made by a serving Fellow or by a member academy.

  2. 2

The nomination is supported by a citation and two independent statements.

  3. 3

The fellowship committee reviews nominations against the published criteria.

  4. 4

The council confirms elections at the annual convening.

  5. 5

New Fellows are entered in the roll under a coded identifier; no name is recorded on the site.
